Just the Goods Newsletter - Autumn 2022
Hello!!
Golden sunshine and crisp air… Autumn has officially arrived in Winnipeg! I always welcome the slide into fall because I’m a tights and boots kinda person, but something about the whirlwind of this past summer is making me want to draw it out for as long as possible. Maybe because it was so uncharacteristically relaxing? Or, maybe because I just finished bottling two new limited edition perfume oils that I created while all the gardens around me were at their peak 🌞 Do you ever feel bridged between these two beautiful seasons, not quite ready for the stillness of winter?
Today’s newsletter captures a little of it all… two new scents to prolong lush summer vibes; a new bath salt to embrace the cozy months ahead; the return of some autumn seasonal favourites; and planning for the months to come. At the bottom of this newsletter is a coupon code, just for you… thank you for subscribing!
New Limited Edition Items
Summer isn't over yet! Two years ago I experienced the magic of moonflowers for the first time. A friend gave me a seedling and it quickly flourished into a magnificently abundant vine absolutely covered with flowers that each bloomed for only a single night. Sitting near them was truly magical. I wish I took more photos!
This summer I sought to capture the essence of those gorgeous flowers and -- in doing so -- created what I believe is an intriguing combination of classically romantic notes with citrus elements that twinkle like nighttime stars overhead
soft and dreamy amyris
smoldering jasmine
crisp litsea fruit oil
earthy oakmoss
passionate Bulgarian rose
After making the Summer Floral Night Blooming blend, I was moved to created a complementary Summer Floral Day Blooming oil that combines a variety of soft, fresh, and bright garden notes including:
powdery champaca
elegant tea rose
fresh Albanian lavender
soft and uplifting Tunisian honeysuckle
refreshing green tea leaf
Most interesting about these two scents is that they can be worn alone, or layered for additional depth and complexity!
Please note: Although inspired by moonflower these blended perfume oils do NOT contain any moonflower/datura/morning glory. They only contain the essential oils and absolutes noted above in a base of MCT coconut oil. Complete ingredients are available in their respective listings here: https://justthegoods.net/collections/new/products/just-the-goods-limited-edition-summer-floral-night-blooming-perfume and here: https://justthegoods.net/collections/new/products/just-the-goods-limited-edition-day-blooming-perfume
Please also note that since these perfume oil blends are limited edition items with only 20 vials available of each, no sample formats have been packed and these are final sale. Thank you! 💚
I don’t know why it has so often worked out this way, but I tend to go hiking more often in the autumn and winter than at other times of year. I’m one of those slow walkers, constantly stopping to admire and photograph mushrooms, moss and lichen. Capturing the softness of autumn as leaves fall to and rest on the ground, Autumn Forest Floor Bath Salts features a combination of botanicals including: antioxidant linden leaf, anti-inflammatory yarrow petals, nourishing rosehips, and earthy reishi mushroom complimented by deep black and white spruce essential oils. Last week I completed two prototypes requested by a massage therapist I’m delighted to work with here in Winnipeg. They requested two items used frequently as part of their practice: a cooling mint balm and a comforting magnesium and arnica salve. I’m looking forward to feedback on the formulas, but in the meantime I’m quite excited about what I’ve come up with, so far.
Just the Goods offers magnesium sulfate (aka “Epsom salt”) in all bath salt formulations; however, this was my first time incorporating magnesium into a topical. Following research into how to work with this mineral in other ways, I decided to choose magnesium chloride as a way to increase accessibility for those who may have sensitivities to sulfate. I knew I wanted to make the formula as shelf stable as possible, so I opted for a salve rather than a lotion. Magnesium isn’t oil soluble so fortunately my new ultra fine grinder turned a crystalline structure into a powder not unlike icing sugar -- a tiny bit of texture is notable when initially applying the product, but body heat melts it almost immediately so further application is a smooth as one would expect.
I’m honestly amazed how quickly the magnesium and arnica salve made my generally still and swollen knuckles feel more mobile and at ease, so much so that I think this is something I’ll continue making for myself on a regular basis. And while I usually opt for a warming formula to relieve muscle pain, I know a lot of people seek cooling formulas to reduce muscle inflammation.
What are your thoughts? Do one or both of these items appeal to you? Would you be interested in seeing them become available at Just the Goods? Please let me know!
